In the last few years, wind turbines have grown enormously in importance when it comes to environmental protection and the construction of renewable energy sources. The present thesis presents the most important legal foundations in connection with the construction of wind power plants, as well as the requirements of the Natura 2000 areas, as well as the role of neighbors and citizens initiatives in such a procedure. In the first and second part of the thesis, the requirements of the Environmental Impact Assessment Act 2000 as well as the regulations of the state of Styria are explained in more detail. In the third part, the focus is on the European guidelines for Natura 2000 areas, in particular, a detailed examination of the Birds and Habitats Directive. Last but not least the possibilities of neighbors in case of a wind turbine installation are presented, as well as more detailed information concerning the citizens initiative.
