The software engineering process has become so complex that many different engineering tools are used by engineers to build software products. While these tools and their artifacts are separately captured by different engineers and should not be seen in isolation. When software product change or fail, it is important to be able to quickly determine which artifact in which tools are affected. We present a new link construct that allows artifacts of different tools to be linked. This is done in a cloud environment which defines a common structure for all kind of engineering artifacts. To apply this link construct, we developed a new linking mechanism and tool, which links the different artifacts using the new link structure. Since the visualization of the artifacts plays an important role regarding the usability of the tool, a user study has been set up to determine the most suitable visualization technique. The result of the user study is that the matrix visualization technique is more suitable than the graph view technique to link artifacts. Based on the user study and the subsequent validation of the link structure through a project, it is ensured that the tool is useful and applicable to real software engineering projects.
